Abstract
316,713. Oliver, J. W. H., and Bisby, J. H. May 19, 1928. Road-traffic signals on vehicles.-A signalling device of the stencil type is illuminated by daylight or artificial light reflectors from a mirror which can be rotated into and out of the operative position. Light passes through the upper face of the frame 10 and is reflected by a mirror 12 through a vertical face 13 to illuminate a stencil 14. The mirror is in three sections each adapted to illuminate one of the signs of the stencil and each capable of being rotated about the axis of the rod 17 so as to reflect light to or keep light from the stencil. For use at night a lamp holder 24 is mounted to slide in guides 25 so that it may either be situated above the upper open face of the frame or may be moved to the rear of the frame in order to allow daylight full access to the mirror. Electric lamps are carried by the holder 24 and can be lighted only when one of the mirror sections is in the operative portion to engage the contacts 30 and 31. In a modification, the stencil consists of a central sign " turn " with an arrow on either side and it is arranged so that the centre mirror section is brought into the operative position simultaneously with either of the side sections. The Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the signs are obscured or exposed by shutters.
