Abstract
523,651. Gate-operating appliances. CRAIG, G. L. Jan. 11, 1939, No. 34387/37. [Class 65 (i)] A gate is actuated by a vehicle which tilts the pivotal axis of the gate, so that the gate moves by gravity. The vehicle wheels depress a treadle 42 or 44, one on each side of the gate, and this movement of the treadle is transmitted by a rod 46 or 48 to a plate 24 pivoted at 32 and provided with two arcuate slots 36, 38 engaged by two pins 20, 22 on the gate. During the movement of the plate 24, the gate is positively swung, the next part of its movement is effected by gravity owing to tilting of the hinge axis, and the remainder of its movement is due to momentum. The treadle is returned to normal by a spring 70 which is compressed during the depression of the treadle by the sliding movement of sleeves 64 having cam engagement with fixed sleeves 58. To prevent immediate reversal of the plate 24 when the treadle returns, the movement of the latter is transmitted to 24 by a lost-motion device 74 comprising two cylinders having pin slot connection.
