[Class 138 (i)] Relates to mechanisms which oscillate a wiper arm through an arc of movement and also move the arm to an unobstructive position, and consists in the combination of a rotatable member h carrying a wiper actuating crank g, a displaceable member i supporting the rotatable member and movable automatically into either of two positions for varying the position of the crank axis, a retaining lever q adapted to secure the displaceable member in either of the two positions, an over-centre spring s acting on the lever, and manually operable means adapted by varying the position of the spring to move the lever so that the displaceable member can be moved to and secured in either position. The lever g carries a projection r which engages either a recess o at one end of a slot n in the member i or a recess p at the other end. The lever q is carried by a sleeve engaging a pin t carrying an arm v to which the other end of the spring s is secured. The crank g is linked to a rack d which oscillates the wiper arm. On turning the shaft t, which may carry an electric switch controlling the driving motor, the spring s is moved to the other side of the shaft t. The member i, which has guide slots m, is thus permitted to move until the projection r engages the recess towards which it is urged by the spring. The additional movement of the rack d so produced moves the wiper arm b to out-of-the-way position. In a modification, the displaceable member swings about a pivot. In another modification, the whole driving mechanism swings about a pivot on the motor casing. Specifications 499,082 and 508,806 are referred to.
