Abstract

524,266. Windscreen-wipers. LUCAS, Ltd., J., HUYTON, A., PURDEN, R. H., and IVERSEN, P. A., SCOTT-. Jan 25, 1939, No. 2561. [Class 138 (i)] Screen wiper operating mechanism comprises a reciprocating member the effective length of which can be varied to move the arm to an unobstructive position. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a crank e operates a connecting rod j connected to the rack a by the member of variable length, which comprises two sliding members m, n connected respectively, to the rod j and rack a, and interconnected by a pivoted slotted link p. The member n is connected to the link by a pivot r ; the pin q connecting the member m with the rod j passes through a slot s in the link p, the slot having lateral recesses t, u at its ends in which the pin q engages to vary the effective length of the connection. The link p is under the influence of an over-centre spring v connected to a pin x on a pivoted member y, the pin projecting into a wedge-shaped gap 4 in a pivoted member 5 under the control of the core 8 of an electromagnet. With the member 5 in the position shown, the pin q, is in the recess t and the wiper is operated normally. When it is desired to move the arm to its unobstructive position the magnet is energized to move the part 5 about its pivot. This, in turn, effects the pivoting of the part y and the link p is thrown over its dead centre to allow the pin q, to enter the recess ". In a modification, a hand-operated lever oscillates a slotted connecting link and the sliding parts m, n are separated to effect the movement of the wiper to its out-of-use position.
