Abstract

523,671. Windscreen-wipers. LUCAS, Ltd., J., HUYTON, A., PURDEN, R. H., and IVERSEN, P. A. SCOTT-. Jan. 11, 1939, No. 914. [Class 138 (i)] Wiper mechanism comprises a crank and a connecting rod the effective length of which can be varied when required whereby the wiper may be moved to a non- service position without altering the direction of rotation of the crank. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the upper arm a is operated by a rack reciprocated by a link o driven by a crank h. The link is in two parts pivoted together at p, a spring s tending to. hold the parts in the position shown. On moving a stop q into the path of the end of the part n, the parts move into the position shown in Fig. 2, the rack being moved to its extreme position and the wiper to its out-of-service position. The part f may open a switch in its movement to stop the drive. As shown in Fig. 4, the joint between the parts o, n is broken by a hand-operated member engaging a spring x so as to cause the part o to pivot about this point, as shown in Fig. 5. In other forms the crank h operates the link o through an eccentric by which its effective length can be varied, the eccentric being operated by manual control through the movement of the crank. In another form the link is furnished with a pivoted, spring-influenced folded end-piece operated by the crank, the length being varied by unfolding the end.
