Abstract
400,448. Mechanical optical illusion toy. BONINGER, M. H., 6, Eschollbruckerstrasse, Darmstadt, Germany. Dec. 19, 1932, No. 35954. [Class 132 (iii).] A mechanically-operated toy produces the illusion of a rotating member, e.g. a sword, passing through an obstacle, e.g. a head, by the member rotating rapidly from one side to the other of the obstacle without passing through it. Manual movement of the lever 6 from left to right compresses the spring 12 and brings the projection 17 into contact with the arm 14 of a spring-pressed fork the other arm of which 13 is moved out of contact with the arm 8 which then rotates rapidly in a clockwise direction through the compressed spiral spring 12 engaging in the ends of the slot 27 in the pivoted toothed sector 10 engaging the pinion 7 secured to the shaft 2 to which is secured the arm 8. The arm 8 thus rotates from one side to the other of the stop 9 and rotates with it the arm 1, which may be in the form of a sword, from one side to the other of a pin 3 which may bear on its end a head 26. The operation produces the illusion of the sword passing through the head. The pin 3 passes through a glass cover of the toy and is removable from a bore 4 for inspection purposes. The action of the toy is reversible through another spring-pressed fork 13, 14. The toycan be used in conjunction with an advertising text.
