Abstract

521,459. Gas engine cycles. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., SENIOR, H. V., and POPHAM, C. A. Nov. 18, 1938, No. 33598. [Class 7 (ii)] Air is admitted to the working cylinder, compressed, and, during or at the end of the compression stroke, a rich mixture of gaseous fuel and air is forced into the cylinder by compressed air, or weak mixture, through a rotary valve 24. A spring-pressed mushroom valve in the duct 15 protects the rotary valve which may inject through more than one opening. An antechamber 23 is provided with compressed air and gas inlets 27, 28, registering with ports 29, 30 in the rotary valve. The valve is also formed with a port 26 registering with a port 25 leading to the engine cylinder. Scavenging air is supplied to the cylinder late in the induction stroke through a separate valve. Before this the ports 25, 27 have been opened permitting gas to be drawn into the antechamber. On the compression stroke, preferably near the end, the port 25 and the compressed air inlet 28 are uncovered ; the compressed air forces the gas in front of it into the cylinder. Ignition may be by electric spark, heat of compression of the charge, or by the action of the latter on an injected oil spray. Hydrogen, methane, producer gas, coal gas, or water gas may be used.
