Abstract

521,034. Upholstery stuffing. WHITELEY, E. O. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2188. [Class 15 (ii)] A dry loose mass of stuffing fibres is prepared by coating the individual fibres with a resilient film of rubber and subjecting them to a treatment whereby the fibres are unattached at points of crossing. The surface of the film may be treated so as to be wrinkled or roughened. Before or after the rubber coating has become firmly set, the fibres may be subjected to a picking or willowing operation so as to fluff up the coated fibres so as to prevent or remove adherence of the fibres at points of crossing. Coating of the fibres may be effected by immersing them in a liquid containing rubber or latex, the surplus being removed by centrifuging. The coating mixture may contain latex, vulcanized or chlorinated latex, and glue, starch or casein. The coating mixture may be in aqueous suspension and it may be passed through a homogeniser before use. Alternatively it may contain chlorinated rubber in a volatile solvent. The fibres used may be of cotton, wool, feathers, wood, sisal, hemp, sugar cane, redwood or other bark, or glass including glass wool. Before being coated with rubber, the fibres may be treated with a coagulant for the rubber, e.g. cotton fibres may be passed into a heated chamber containing steam and acetic acid or formaldehyde vapour. Crinkling of the coating may be effected by rapid heating, or by immersion in benzine, carbon tetrachloride, or caustic soda. Glass fibres may be heated and dipped into a solution of molasses, centrifuged, and dried, prior to the process of coating with rubber.
