Abstract

The fastness to washing and scouring of textile materials impregnated with insoluble metal compounds is improved by applying to the materials a solution in an organic solvent of a substance which forms a film on the materials which is substantially insoluble in aqueous scouring liquids. Suitable materials for treatment are artificial silk materials which have been delustred or loaded by incorporating therein insoluble metal oxides or metal compounds. The amount of film-forming material need not exceed 5 per cent of the weight of the textile materials, and this may be applied in solution of 5 per cent or less concentration. Examples of suitable film-forming substances are polymerized unsaturated compounds such as polymerized vinyl acetate, polymerized vinyl chloracetate, polyvinyl ethers, polystyrene, polymerized unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes, polymerized esters of unsaturated aliphatic acids, urea-formaldehyde condensation products, phenol-aldehyde condensation products, phenolurea-aldehyde condensation products, alkyd resins and modified alkyd resins. Condensation products may be applied in partially or fully condensed form. Other film-forming substances are cellulose esters, ethers, or ether-esters, and chlorinated rubber. The solvent in which the film-forming substance is applied may have no solvent action or some solvent action on the textile materials. The following examples are given: (1) Natural silk fabric is steeped in stannic chloride solution, rinsed, steeped in disodium phosphate, soaped, rinsed, and dried. The loaded fabric is treated with a 1 per cent solution of cellulose acetate in acetone, passed through nip rollers and dried. (2) Cellulose acetate fabric is loaded by treatment first with a bath containing stannic chloride and ammonium thiocyanate, and then with a solution of sodium dihydrogen phosphate, after which it is treated with a 1,5 per cent solution of saponified polyvinyl acetate in 50 per cent aqueous alcohol. According to the Provisional Specification, the following film-forming substances can be used, viscose, cuprammonium cellulose, ammonium cellulose xanthate, magnesium cellulose xanthate, or a cellulose xanthate of an organic amino base; furthermore, the film-forming substance may be contained in one of the reagents used for forming the insoluble substance on the materials.
