Abstract

520,855. Spring forks. EXCELSIOR MOTOR CO., Ltd., and WALKER, R. E. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31677. [Class 136 (iii)] In spring forks for motor or other cycles, of the type in which the fork blades slide in the ends of the fork crown under spring control, the springs are arranged wholly above the fork crown and are independent of the steering- column carried by the crown, which has downwardly extending tubular guides for the fork blades. As applied to a front fork, the steering-stem 5 is provided at its lower end with a transverse bracket or fork crown 6, which is provided with guide tubes 7 to receive slidably the fork sides 8, the upper ends of which are united by a bridge-piece 13 secured by nuts 14 on studs 11, dust covers 15 being interposed -between the bridge-piece 13 and the guide tubes 7. The crown 6 is formed with a forwardly-extending lug 17 in which is fixed a rod 18 forming a guide for the centre of the bridge-piece 13, which is of forwardly-bowed or V formation in plan. The sliding movement of the fork is controlled by a main compression spring 22 in a telescopic cover 24, 25, and by a recoil spring 29 or rubber buffer.
