520,735. Cigarette-making and packing machinery. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Oct. 28, 1938, No. 31212. [Class 130] [Also in Groups II and XVII] Apparatus for end-tightening of tobacco in cigarettes and for rejecting those which do not conform to the required standard, comprises pairs of opposed feelers 14 mounted on arms 8 on a rotating carrier 12. One arm of each pair is resilient and pressed towards the other by yieldable means 17 such as a strip of spring steel, or a similarly shaped rigid member pressed by a spring. The feelers 14 consist of studs slightly less in diameter than a cigarette and adjacent to guiding elements 15. The cigarettes conveyed by a belt 2 are diverted laterally by deflectors 3 and travel over spring guides 11 to the rotary feeler-mechanism. From the latter normal cigarettes are discharged to a belt 16, short or soft cigarettes to a chute 124. In the former case a cone 18 flexes the arm 8 outward to release the cigarette ; in the case of the short cigarette the arm 8 is bent inwardly by the cone, retaining the cigarette until released into the chute by engagement of the arm 8 with a curved rail 25.
