Abstract
520,238. Heating water by electricity. SMITH, I. Oct. 14, 1938, No. 29777. [Class 39 (iii)] Water circulates from an upper compartment 9 in a heater through a down pipe 16 which is connected to the bottom of the compartment, through a lower compartment 8 containing heating elements and returns to the top of upper compartment through a pipe 18. The compartments are separated by an air space 10. An overflow 19 opens into the hot water outlet 22, which is controlled by a cock 21. A heating element consists of resistance wire wound on a flat base of sheet mica, porcelain or the like and is enclosed between insulation sheets 23a and housed in flat metal sheaths 24. The sheaths are supported at their inner ends in slots in a vertical frame 25, and their outer ends are soldered to the wall of the heating compartment. An opening in the outer wall 2 permits the insertion and removal of the elements.
