Abstract
518,853. Ships, propellors, and stern construction. SELDEN, F. H. Sept. 29, 1938, Nos. 28373 and 28375. Convention dates, Oct. 2, 1937, and April 23, 1938. [Classes 113 (ii) and 114] To enable access to be obtained to the rudder assemblage the equivalent of a stern post is made in the form of a closed hollow body projecting from the hull and 'enabling a man to get to the outboard parts even when the ship is water borne. As shown a hollow stern post 2 has an extension 4 with a watertight wall 10 and reinforcing plates 11 with openings 12. The rudder stock 6 is in the form of a tube and is carried in bearings 20 on an intermediate deck 19 and bearings 22 in the extension 4. Adjusting screws 23 for the bearings are accessible from a chamber 13 in the extension. An arm 21 connects the rudder stock to the steering gear. The side surfaces of the rudder are formed by plates welded to each other at edges and to rudder stock at 35. Reinforcing webs 36 with openings 37 are welded to side plates and other parts of the rudder. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a weakening of the lower part 38 of the rudder to allow of collapse during grounding without serious damage to the stronger parts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
