Abstract
518,197. Cellulose ethers ; ethers of polysaccharoses. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Aug. 18, 1938, No. 24383. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1937. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (ill)] Aralkyl ethers of polpsaccharoses are prepared by reacting an aralkyl halide with an alkali polysaccharose in the presence of a cobalt compound or pentavalent arsenic compound. The etherification reaction may be carried out in the presence of diluents such as benzene, toluene or dibenzyl ether. In the examples : (1) alkali cellulose is kneaded with a solution of arsenic acid in sodium hydroxide and the mixture is etherified with benzylchloride' in presence of dibenzyl ether; (2) cellulose is kneaded with a solution of cobalt nitrate or cobalt chloride in sodium hydroxide and the mixture is etherified with benzyl chloride in presence of dibenzyl ether.
