Abstract

In the production of aralkyl ethers of carbohydrates, aralkyl halides are reacted with alkali cellulose, or the alkali derivatives of similar carbohydrates of high molecular weight, in the presence of boron compounds. The boron compounds may be added p to the reaction mass in solid form or dissolved in an aqueous neutral or alkaline medium. Alternatively, the alkali cellulose or other alkali carbohydrate, during its manufacture, may be impregnated with the boron compound. Diluents such as benzene, toluene or dibenzylether may be present during the etherification. In examples, alkali cellulose is etherified with benzyl chloride in presence of boric acid or sodium tetraborate.
