Abstract
523,191. Cellulose ethers. HERCULES POWDER CO. April 5, 1939, No. 10673. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] Lengths chipped from a sheet of lightly felted cellulosic material according to the method of Specification 463,437, are subjected to treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution and an alkylating agent and converted into a cellulose ether. The chipped cellulosic material may be mixed with the alkali solution without any prior mastication treatment. The chipped material may be mixed with the alkali solution and alkyl halide at the same time. The sheet from which the chips are obtained may be formed from cotton-linters or wood-pulp. It may be of high alpha-cellulose content. The chips may have a thickness of 0.01 inches, a width of 0.015 inches, and a length up to about 2 inches. Methyl chloride, dimethyl sulphate, ethyl bromide, propyl chloride, or butyl chloride, or other alkylating agent may be used. Diluents or solvents such as alcohol, benzene, toluene, or dioxane may be present. The reaction may be carried out in an autoclave and at raised temperature.
