Abstract
507,203. Cellulose others. MANDEVILLE, D. C., HOUGHTON, A. A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 6, 1937, No. 33746. [Class 2 (ii)] Low, substituted cellulose ethers are obtained by the addition of a liquid etherifying medium in the form of a fine mist, an atomized solution,. or an atomized emulsion in a suitable liquid medium, to comminuted and agitated alkali cellulose. The cellulose ethers so produced may be subjected to furfher alkylation to produce water soluble forms. In an example, comminuted sulphite wood pulp is added to a solution of caustic soda contained in a shredding machine. After some hours a solution of ethylene chlorohydrin in water is atomized into the machine for 2 hours and the temperature is then gradually raised to 30‹ C. The product is aged, acidified, centrifuged, and washed. It dissolves completely in 7À5 per cent NaOH solution when cooled to -7‹ C. with subsequent gradual rise of temperature. If the ethylene chlorohydrin were added in a thin stream a solution of the. product containing undissolved fibres would be obtained. Other examples employ dimethyl sulphate as etherifying agent, the product being converted if desired into a water-soluble form by further alkylation with methyl or ethyl chloride. In another example glyceryl alpha-monochlorohydrin is used as etherifying agent. In another example an emulsion of dimethyl sulphate in water containing Turkey red oil is atomized and introduced into the alkali-cellulose. The reaction mixture is stirred and at first heated, then allowed to cool. Specifications 410,152 and 410,153 are referred to.
