Abstract

517,795. Vehicle-wheel turning-gear. STANCLIFFE, C. W., and WINGET, Ltd. Aug. 6, 1938, No. 23306. [Class 103 (ii)] A ratchet-type propelling device for a concrete mixer or other heavy wheeled machine comprises a wheel-rim gripping member 8 carried from a lever 2, pivoted on the wheel hub 3 by a link 6 which extends across the rim 7 and is held in a slightly inclined position by a spring 9 so that the member 8 grips the wheel when the lever 2 is moved in one direction and is free in the other direction. The spring 9 extends to an arm 10 pivoted on the lever 2 so that it can be caused to hold the link in a position inclined on either side of a central position to determine the direction in which the wheel is turned. The link can be held in the central position by a pin in which the device is ineffective. When provided on a concrete mixer the ratchet lever may be operated by the raising and lowering of the hopper. The ratchet device may instead comprise teeth on the wheel rim or hub engaged by a pawl.
