[Class 66] A can-opener comprises a plate or handle member 1, Figs. 1, 3, at the underside of which is mounted a knurled traction wheel 4 adapted to engage inside the rim of the can, the shaft of which wheel passes through a boss 2 and is fitted with a handle 5. A revoluble cutter 13 attached to a second knurled wheel 12 is carried by an arm 8 pivoted at 7, the shaft 10 passing down through an arcuate slot 11 in the plate. In the inoperative position of the parts, Fig. 1, the rim of the can is readily engageable between the wheels 4, 12 ; clockwise turning of the handle 5 from this position causes a lug 6 depending from the handle 5 to strike an upstanding lug 9 on the part 8 causing that part to turn so that the rim of the can is gripped and the cutter enters the wall, whereupon further turning cuts off the end. Reverse turning of the handle disengages the device. In the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 and 7, the pivot 25 of the cutter and corresponding knurled wheel is mounted directly at the underside of the plate and the knurled wheel 21 which engages inside the rim and in this case is the driven wheel, is carried by an arm 17 provided with a boss extending through a radial slot 19 in the handle member. Pins 23, 24 on the handle 22 and the plate coact as in the first form to bring the parts into position. In this construction resiliency is given to the arm 17 by its curved form and also if desired by making it of spring material.
