A can opener comprises a frame 10 having an elongated slot 12, a feed wheel 15 fixed on a rotatable shaft 13 extending through the slot, a cutter 20 fixed to the frame and spaced therefrom by a spacer plate 21 and a thin shim 22 having a projection 26 extending adjacent the cutter to separate the cutter from the inner surface of the rim R of a cam C when the opener is in use on the can, and a spring member 23 having its ends curled round opposite ends of the spacer plate 21 whereby it is mounted in position to engage the upper edge of the rim R, the rim-engaging portion of the spring having a continuous convex curvature. The opener is applied to the can with the wheel 15, as in Fig. 1, spaced rearwardly from the cutter 20, and engaging the underside of the rim. The wheel is rotated by means of a turning wing 14 on the shaft 13 and moves relatively to the rim till it reaches, Fig. 8b, a position directly below the cutter, having by this movement reached the other end of the slot 12, and caused the cutter to pierce the lid L. The cutter severs the lid on the continued rotation of the wheel 15. The projection 26 of the shim 22 prevents the cutter from shaving particles from the rim. A bent arm 19 of the frame member 10 engages the outside of the can to position the cutter in respect thereto. The deflection of the spring 23 permits the opener to be applied to rims of various sizes. The opener incorporates a corkscrew 30, pivoted at 31, a bottle opener 32, 33, a cap remover 35, 36 and a screwdriver or lever 37. U.S.A. Specification 2,190,940 is referred to.
