Abstract

872,405. Spare-wheel carriers. KENNEDY & KEMPE Ltd. Sept. 21, 1959 [Sept. 22, 1958], No. 30192/58. Class 136(1). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a spare-wheel carrying means of the kind in which the wheel 27 is detachably secured to a rotatable drum 20 and supported upon a pivoted carrier beam 10 for luffing movement over the side of the vehicle, a wire rope 22 anchored upon the carrier beam being engaged around the drum and wound thereon or paid out therefrom as the wheel is rotated for raising or lowering it from or to the ground, the drum 20 is provided with brake shoes 33, 34 normally resting loosely in contact with it but controlled by a pawl 35 mounted on the carrier beam 10, the rotation of the drum 20 in the direction for lowering the wheel causing the pawl 35 to engage the brake shoes 33, 34 thereby stopping their rotation and causing them to expand outwardly into frictional contact with the drum to resist the descent of the wheel. During rotation of the drum in the opposite direction, for raising the wheel, the pawl 35 trails idly over the brake shoes whilst they revolve in loose contact with the drum. The beam 10 is held in carrying position by a spring latch 28 which may be released by a pull on a hand-grip lever 30. The lever 30 is also used to start to lower the wheel by swinging the beam 10 outwards. The brake shoes 33, 34 will not immediately make frictional contact with the brake drum 20 because the wheel will usually have to make part of a revolution before the pawl 35 can engage between the shoes. The pawl 35 is controlled by a tension spring 48 anchored to the carrier beam, and a stopper 49 projecting from the beam limits the movement of the pawl in the direction of the force exerted bv the spring. The brake shoes 33, 34 are fitted between ribs 42, 43 provided internally of the drum 20 (Fig. 3). There may be two carrier beams 10 arranged to support two spare wheels coming down on opposite sides of the vehicle. Specification 338,670 is referred to.
