A skid shoe attachment for emergency stopping of a vehicle comprises a skid shoe engageable with the ground and carrying a plate 12 engageable with the tyre of a rear wheel of the vehicle, and which is pivoted by a pin-and-slot or equivalent connection 9 to a rod 3 which is slidable in a cylinder mounted on the vehicle and which is acted on by a compression spring 6 to apply the shoe, a catch 5 being engageable with a collar 23 on the rod to normally hold the shoe in a raised position, and a cable 25 passing to winch means for raising the shoe after use. The rod 3 may slide directly in a cylinder 4 attached to the vehicle (Fig. 1, not shown) or may slide in an intermediate cylinder 31 containing a compression spring 32, the cylinder 31 being in turn slidable in the cylinder 4 and acted on by the spring 6. The cylinder 4 may be either curved, as shown, or straight and the plate 12 may be directly secured to the shoe but, as shown, is preferably carried by an arm 11 pivoted to the shoe and guided by pins 16 on the rod, compression springs 15 being located between the rod and the opposite ends of the arm. The two catches 5 associated with a pair of shoes on opposite sides of the vehicle are connected by cable to a common turnbuckle 18 (Fig. 1, not shown) which is connected by a further cable to a release handle 21 in the driver's cab. The raising cables 25 pass to separate drums operated by a brace 30 which when inserted into a ratchet wheel 27 causes a pawl to cooperate with the latter during winding, the brace being removed when the appropriate catch 5 is re-engaged. In the simplified arrangement of (Fig. 3, not shown) a common catch 61 engageable with a notch 62 in a slide block 58 retains both shoes 50 in raised position, a lever 64 being provided for raising the shoes, which are connected to the block 58 by cables 57. Instead of coil springs, hairpin type springs 41 (Fig. 2, not shown) may be used. The shoes may have replaceable sole plates (Fig. 5, not shown).
