[Class 2 (iii)] Sulphonamides of the general formula H2N.SO2-Ar-NHCS-NE1R<11>, where-Ar is an aromatic residue and R<1>, R<11>may be hydrogen or an organic residue (including a phenylstibonic acid residue or a phenylarsonic acid residue) are made by the action of ammonia or an amine NHR<1>R<11> on a thiocarbimide of the formula H2N.SO2-Ar-NCS. Where R<1> = hydrogen, the compounds may also be made by the action of a thiocarbimide NCSR" on an aminoary Isulphonamide. The products are therapeutic agents or dyestuff intermediates. In examples (1) 4-sulphonamidophenylthiourea is made by treating 4-sulphonamidophenylthiocarbamide (made by treating 4-aminophenylsulphonamide with phosgene) with ammonia in alcohol; (2).4:4<1>-di(sulphonamido)-diphenyl thiourea is made from 4-aminophenylsulphonamide and 4-sulphonamidophenylthiocarbimide; (3) 4 - sulphonamidodiphenylthiourea - 3<1> - carboxylic acid is made from 4-sulphonamidophenylthiocarbimide and m-aminobenzoic acid ; (4) 4 - sulphonamido - 4<1>- ethoxy - diphenylthiourea is made from 4-aminobenzenesulphonamide and 4-phenetyl-thiocarbimide ; (5) 4 sulphonamidodiphenylthiourea - 4<1> - stibonic acid is made from 4 - sulphonamidophenylthiocarbimide and sodium stibanilate ; (6) alpha - (1 - pyridyl) - # (4 sulphonamidophenyl) - thiourea is made from 4 - sulphonamidophenylthiocarbimide and a - aminopyridine and (7) 4-sulphonamidodiphenylthiourea - 4<1> - arsonic acid is made from 4-sulphonamidophenylthiocarbimide and sodium p-arsanilate.
