Abstract
The invention comprises sulphanilamidoisoxazoles of the formula <FORM:1011850/C2/1> and their salts, wherein R is hydrogen or a C1- 6 alkyl group (the broken line indicating that R is an optional substituent); and their preparation by reacting the appropriate 3-aminoisoxazole with a benzenesulphonyl halide bearing in the para-position a substituent convertible to amino by reduction or hydrolysis (e.g. acetylamino, ethoxycarbonylamino, nitro or azo) and hydrolysing or reducing to effect the necessary conversion. Preferably R is hydrogen or a methyl group. 3-Amino-isoxazoles optionally bearing a 4-alkyl substituent, used as starting materials, are made by reacting a halogenated nitrile Hal.CH2.CR(Hal).CN or CH2 = C(Hal).CN with hydroxylamine or an N-substituted hydroxylamine, e.g. N-carbamoyl hydroxylamine. a ,b -Dibromo-isobutyric acid nitrile is made by brominating methacrylic acid nitrile. Pharmaceutical preparations, having antibacterial activity, comprise the above sulphonamides or their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, e.g. with alkali and alkaline earth metals or organic bases such as mono- or di-ethanolamine, in admixture with a carrier. The preparations may take forms suitable for enteral or parenteral administration such as tablets, drag<\>aees, suppositories, capsules, suspensions or emulsions.
