[Class 2 (iii)] Therapeutically valuable diguanidino-derivatives of diaryl-alkanes, diaryl-ethers and diaryloxy-alkanes of the general formula R.(CH2)n.R where R represents guanidino-aryl, and n is a whole member, and in which one or more methylene groups may be replaced by oxygen to give compounds of the type R-O-R, R-(CH2)n.O.(CH2)n.R or . R.O. (CH2)n.O.R but excluding. 4:4<1>-diguanidinodiphenyl methane, are prepared by the. iateraction of cyanamide or dicyanamide with the amino substituted derivatives of diaryl-alkanes, diaryl-ethers or diaryloxy-alkanes corresponding to the above formulae. In examples (1) cyanamide is reacted in alcoholic solution with 4:41- diamino-alpha-#-diphenoxyethane dihydrochloride to give 4:4<1>-diguanidino-alpha-#-diphenoxyethone dihydrochloride. (2) Cyanamide and 4:41- diaminodiphenylethone dihydrochloride are reacted as in example (1) to give 4:41-diguanidinodiphenylethane dihydrochloride. (3) 4:4<1>- diaminodiphenylpropane is reacted with cyamide in alcohol, the dicyandiamide filtered off, and the residue treated with ammonium nitrate in nitric acid. The nitrate so formed is purified with charcoal and the free base regenerated with caustic soda to give 4:4<1>-diguanidinodiphenylpropane. (4) 4:4<1>-diaminodiphenyl-etherhydrochloride is treated in alcohol-solution with cyanamide, the reaction product acidified and purified to give 4:4<1>-diguanidinodiphenyl-ether dinitrate.
