Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0987438/C2/1> and their non-toxic acid-addition salts, wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 may each represent a hydrogen or chlorine atom or an isopropyl, dimethylamino, diethylamino, hydroxy, methoxy or nitro radical, R5 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy radical and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and m is 2n when n is 1 to 3 or 2n- 2 when n is 3 or 4, with the proviso that when n is 1, R1, R2, R3 and R4\t are not all hydrogen. The compounds are prepared by reacting an appropriate aldehyde with 1,3-propylene diamine or 1,3-diamino-2-propanol and reducing the compounds thus obtained with, for example, metallic sodium or sodium borohydride. N,N1 - Dicinnamylidene - 1,3 - diamino - 2 - propanol is prepared by reacting cinnamaldehyde with 1,3-diamino-2-propanol.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having antimicrobial activity for oral, parenteral or topical administration comprise a compound of the formula <FORM:0987438/A5-A6/1> or a non-toxic acid addition salt thereof, wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 may each represent a hydrogen or chlorine atom or an isopropyl, dimethylamino, diethylamino, hydroxy, methoxy, or nitro radical, R5 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy radical and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4 and m is 2n when n is 1 to 3 or 2n-2 when n is 3 or 4, with the proviso that when n is 1, R1, R2, R3 and R4 are not all hydrogen, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable organic or inorganic carrier. The compositions may be formulated as tablets, dragees, solutions, suspensions, emulsions, creams, lotions or ointments, and coacting antibiotics and germicides may be incorporated therein.
