Abstract

517,182. Balancing, steam &c. engine parts. AKTIEBOLAGET BOLINDER - MUNKTELL. July 21, 1938, No. 21701. Convention date, July 21, 1937. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] An internal - combustion or other piston machine, with a crank-shaft and having relatively few cylinders and unsymmetrical in shape with respect to the axis of rotation, is dynamically balanced. A machine body enclosing the piston mechanism is journalled movably about a centre on the axis 'of rotation in bearings so that impulses are taken up by the machine body, spring members being interfixed between this body and a fixed abutment such as the machine bed. As shown, the body is rotatably journalled in the base 18 in bearing elements 16, which can rotate relatively to the bearings 17, rigidly secured to the base. The centres of the bearings 16, 17 coincide with the axes of the crank-shaft. Below the shaft, the casing is formed as a balance weight 20, which statically and dynamically balances the engine body. An arm 23 rigidly secured to the crank case, engages a spring 22 housed in a piston 24 in a cylinder 25 connected tu a second cylinder 27 containing a piston slide valve connected to the arm 23. A port 32 in the valve puts a passage 26 in communication with pressure oil 33 or an outlet 34. An oil outlet 36 with a non-return valve 37 is connected to the bottom of the cylinder 27. An oil discharge channel 38 opens into the cylinder 27 at a distance above its bottom. Eccentrics 41 are arranged on the shaft on each side of discs 40 and have a stroke about one third of the crank throw. Eccentric straps 41 carry a member 44 mounted on guides 45. The balance weight 44 is three times the weight of the piston 12 and rod 13. A silencer 51 is connected to the cylinder by a conduit 50, with spherical engaging surfaces containing packing rings 53 to permit oscillations. When the arm 23 moves downwardly under a high reactive impulse, oil is supplied from the pipe 33 to the cylinder 25. In an upper position, the channel 32 communicates with the discharge 34. The setting length or stroke of the piston 24 is, e.g., ten times the oscillation amplitude of the casing 11. If the engine is to be constructed for reverse running as well as forward running, a further spring device of a similar kind is provided on the opposite side of the shaft. A modified manner of balancing the interior-moving members of the engine is shown in Fig. IV. A weight 44 is connected by a rod 43 to a crank pin 41 with half the throw of the crank 14. The weight of the piston and rod 44, 41 are double those of the piston 12 and rod 13.
