Abstract
7258. Jones, A. P. S. May 20,1914, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Crank linkages.-A crank is connected to the pistons of an engine or pump by means of eccentrics, with the effect that the throw of the pistons is double that of the crank, and the irregularity of motion due to the deflexions of a connecting-rod is obviated. As applied to a four-cylinder engine or pump, two eccentrics 11, 12, Fig. 1, rotate in plates 9, 10 connecting the pairs of pistons, and are rigidly connected together by bolts 15. The crank-pin 13 passes through the eccentrics at a point midway between their centres. The eccentrics, being constrained to move along straight lines, rotate at the same speed as the crank and in the opposite direction, and the pistons reciprocate with a throw double that of the crank. Fig. 14 shows an arrangement with a single eccentric, applicable to a pair of co-axial cylinders. Toothed wheels 16, 17 on the crank-pin and the eccentric 11 cause these two parts to rotate at the same speed in opposite directions.
