Abstract

5993. Mackenzie, J. W., [Stowell, B. F., Norman, C. E. van, and Jewett, G. M.]. March 11. Oscillating-vane type.-Comprises an engine with two or more cylinders which can be worked either simple or compound, so that, if used on a motor carriage it may be run economically when the running conditions are easy, or may be made to develope great power when required. Fig. 3 shows a vertical section through one of the cylinders and Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of a two- cylinder engine complete. The vane i mounted on the shaft k is oscillated in the cylinder b by steam distributed alternately to opposite sides by the slide valve in the steam chest d. The rocking motion of the shaft k, through the medium of a pinion g, is caused to reciprocate the toothed sector 10, which is mounted on an eccentrically- adjustable pivot, and drives the crank shaft s by means of a connecting-rod 14. The valve is worked by an eccentric and rocking - lever l, or by a link motion. The high - pressure cylinder is at a and the low- pressure cylinder at a<2>; steam is supplied by the pipe A. The change from compound to high- pressure working is effected by a partial rotation of the plug P by a handle M. The plug P has two sets of ports in it, each forming a three-way valve, the simultaneous adjustment of both in conjunction with the ports in the box H producing all the requisite changes at the same time.
