[Classes 2(iii) and 15(ii)] Azo dyes free from sulphonic acid groups are made by a diazotised aromatic p-nitroamine with a coupling component of the formula where X, Z1 and Z2 are H or alkyl, and Y is a carbon chain of at least two C-atoms attached #Z1 to the group -#C-cooH through a hetero-atom. #Z2 The coupling components may be made by reacting a component of the formula with an amino-, hydroxyl- or mercapto-carboxylic acid, e.g., glycollic acid, thioglycollic acid, alpha-oxypropionic acid or glycine. They may also be made by reacting #-hydroxy-, amino- or mercapto-alkylaminobenzenes with alpha-halogenated aliphatic acids, e.g., chloracetic, alpha-chlorpropionic, alpha-bromopropionic, or alpha-bromobutyric acids. The compounds in which the heteroatom is sulphur can be oxidised to sulphoxides or sulphons, which may also be used as coupling components. The reaction products of aromatic amines with epichlorhydrin, of the formula may also be reacted with bodies such as aminoacetic acid and thioglycollic acid to produce suitable coupling conponents. The dyestuffs, in the form of their alkali metal or ammonium salts, are water-soluble and have pronounced affinity for cellulose esters and ethers. Small quantities of substances having an alkaline reaction, e.g., ammonia or an alkali salt of phosphoric acid, or an organic base such as pyridine or ethanolamine, may be used in dyeing such esters and ethers. In examples, p-nitraniline is diazotized and coupled with (1) 2 - (N - ethyl - N - phenylamino) - ethoxy - acetic acid and (2) 2 - (N - butyl - N - 3 - methylphenylamino) - ethoxyacetic acid ; the products dye cellulose acetate artificial silk in red shades. Specification 422,843 is referred to.' The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 517,918. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as'accepted.
