Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble disazo dyes that contain at least two SO3H groups, of formula <FORM:1056524/C4-C5/1> wherein D is the residue of a diazo component containing an azo group and at least one SO3H group, m is 1 or 2 and X is a heterocyclic residue which, by virtue of its possessing a substituent which can be easily split off, is capable of reacting with cotton with formation of a covalent bond and metal complexes thereof. The dyes are prepared by azo coupling using appropriate components or by a condensation process wherein a dye of the above formula, wherein the -NHX group is replaced by -NH2, is reacted with a suitable heterocyclic compound such as a halopyrimidine, halopyrimidine sulphonyl halide, dihaloquinoxaline carboxylic or sulphonic acid halide, dihalophthalazine carboxylic acid halide or halotriazine. The dyes may be metallized by copper, chromium, nickel or cobalt compounds at any suitable stage in the preparation. The dyes give blue shades on cotton by the usual reactive dyeing processes. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 838,337.
