Abstract

The invention comprises metal complexes of monoazo dyestuffs of formula:- <FORM:0768236/IV(b)/1> wherein R is a benzene residue free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, bound to the azo linkage ortho to the OX groups and having no nitro group para to the OX group, X is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and Z is a sulphonic acid or sulphonamide group, the metallized dyes containing one atom of metal per molecule of monoazo dye. The metallized dyes are prepared by treating monoazo dyestuffs of the above formula with a metallizing agent, and when X is an alkyl group under conditions such that is is split off. Specified metallizing agents are iron, nickel, cobalt, copper and chromium compounds. The metallizing agent may be reacted with the isolated dyestuff or with the reaction mixture from the coupling. Specified diazo components for the preparation of the dyestuffs are 2 - aminophenol, 2 - amino - anisole, 2 - amino - 1 - hydroxybenzene - 4 - sulphonamide and 2 - amino - 1:4-dimethoxybenzene - 5 - sulphonamide and the N - substituted derivatives thereof, 5 - nitro - 4 - methyl - or - chloro - 2 - aminophenol, 5 - nitro - 2 - aminophenol, 4 - or 6-chloro - 4 - 6 - acetylamino - 2 - aminophenol, 2 - amino - 1 - hydroxybenzene - 4 - methyl-sulphone, 4 - amino - 3 - hydroxy - diphenyl sulphone, 4:6 - dichloro - or 3:4:6 - trichloro - 2 - aminophenol, 4 - methyl - or - chloro - 2 - amino - phenol or - anisole, 1:4 - dimethoxy- or -diethoxy-2 - aminobenzene and 1:4 - dimethoxy- or - diethoxy - 2 aminobenzene. Specified coupling components are 1 - naphthol - 3:6 - disulphonic acid - 8 - sulphonamide or - N - methyl - or - phenyl-sulphonamide and 1 -naphthol - 3:6:8 -trisulphonic acid. The coupling is carried out in alkaline medium and if desired in the presence of alcohol or pyridine. The dyestuffs are suitable for dyeing silk, leather and wool; they dye wool in red to blue shades. In examples, the following monoazo dyestuffs are prepared and chromed; 4 - chloro - 2 - amino-anisole or 4 - chloro - 2 - aminophenol or 1:4 - dimethoxy - 5 - chloro - 2 - aminobenzene or 5 - nitro - 2 - amino-anisole or 4:6 - dichloro - 2 - aminophenol or 6 - nitro - 4 - chloro - 2 - aminophenol or 5 - nitro - 4 - methyl-2-aminophenol--> 1-naphthol - 3:6:8 - trisulphonic acid and 4 - methyl - 2 - aminophenol--> 1 - naphthol - 8-sulphonamido - 3:6:8 - trisulphonic acid.
