Abstract
516,570. Sliding-door fastenings. DUPLE BODIES &. MOTORS, Ltd., and BARKER, H. June 2, 1938, No. 16548. [Class 44] A fastening for a sliding door 1, particularly for use on a vehicle arrests closing movement at intermediate positions in addition to holding the door closed or fully open, and comprises a pair of pawls 22, 23 adapted to project, under the action of springs 67, into engagement with stops on the under surface of a channel rail 6 in which runs the door supporting carriage 2 with rollers 5. The pawls, which are pivoted at 66 on the door-supporting plate carried by carriage 2, have tail-pieces 65 on which springs 67 bear, and project into engagement through an aperture in the plate. The stops are bevelled at one side to allow the pawls to ride over them in one direction, but prevent movement in the other. Pawl 23 co-operates with stop 8 to secure the door in open position, and pawl 22 with stop 11 to hold the door closed. Intermediate stops 9, 10 are provided to arrest closing movement under vehicle acceleration if the door is not secured in fully open position. Release of the operative pawl is effected by pressure on an inside or outside handle in the direction of desired door movement. Inside handle 33 is pivoted inside at 44 at its upper end, the lower end 48 projecting through the door to an outside pivot 55. The lower end of the outside handle 47 is pivoted outside at 40, its upper end 49 projecting through the door to an inside pivot 58. The handles are connected so as to move together by a block 50 slidable in a recess in the door and connected at 52 to the part 48. A spring 61 bears on the block to hold the handles in normal central position. The upper end of the inside handle has adjustable tappets 64 bearing respectively against the tail-pieces of the pawls . so that on movement, of the handle the appropriate pawl is released.
