Fastenings, railway and other carriage door.-The fastening for a railway or other carriage door requires both a lifting and a turning motion of the inside handle to be opened. The spindle d, Fig. 1, of the outer handle c has a projection engaging a notch on the latch e. The arm g on the spindle d is connected by the rod h to the arm i on the spindle r, mounted in the casej, k, s. The stem m of the inside handle or knob l has a vertical groove n engaging the fixed feather o, Fig. 5, on the plate k, and the feather q on the end of the spindle r. The knob l is normally held down, in engagement with the feather o, by the spring u, attached either to the sliding plate t or to the spindle m. When the handle is raised, the groove n engages the feather q, and the latch may be unfastened. The plate v fixed to the knob l covers the slot p in which the knob works. The device may be arranged at the inner end of the spindle d, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The fixed feather o may be dispensed with, and the positions of the groove n and the feather q may be reversed.
