Abstract

516,430. Thermally-controlled mixing valves. SHERLOCK, J. E., and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. May 31, 1938, No. 16270. [Class 135] A thermostatically controlled mixing valve of the kind having two mechanically connected valve members adapted to engage their seat alternately has the two members arranged coaxially one in the cold water chamber the other in the mixing chamber. In the form shown in the Figure the valve members 9, 10 are controlled by the thermal element 18 and the cold water valve 10 may be adjusted on the connecting spindle 11 to shut off or vary the total flow. This adjustment is effected by manual rotation of a sleeve 31 having grooves 36 engaging projections 35 on the screwed valve member 10 while the valve 9 is held against rotation by pins 9a. The thermal bellows has a socketted lower plate adapted to fit on a boss on the casing and is adjustably loaded by a spring 37 bearing on the valve 10 or on an abutment resting on the end of the connecting spindle. The movable abutment 38 has projections engaging the grooves 36 and is moved by a screwed spindle 39 supported in the closed end of the sleeve 31 and provided with a manipulating head 41. Leakage tlirough the spindle bearing 12 may be prevented by a flexible sleeve 42 of synthetic rubber or by an additional facing on the valve member 10 engaging the top of the bearing 12 in the closed position. In a, modification the mechanism for adjusting the valve 10 on the valve spindle is' dispensed with and the movable abutment for the loading spring can only be adjusted after a closure cap has been removed.
