Abstract

522,577. Mixing valves. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd., and SHERLOCK, J. E. Dec. 9, 1938, No. 35977. [Class 135] A mixing valve device has hot and cold water control valves disposed on opposite sides of the fulcrum of a rocking lever actuated by a thermostatic bellows adjacent the outlet. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hot and cold supplies are controlled by valves 10, 11 interconnected by a lever 18 held against an adjustable pivot 16 by a spring 21. The pivot 16 is carried by a slidable carriage 15 adjusted by a screwed spindle 13 provided with a stuffing-box 14 and handle 12. An extension 22 of the lever 18 engages the free end of a thermal bellow 23 arranged near the outlet port 9. The bellows is loaded by a spring 25 arranged between an abutment 24 carried by the bellows and an abutment 26 adjustably mounted on a screwed spindle 27 rotatably mounted in the casing, rotation of the abutment being prevented by projections engaging grooves 28 in the casing. Leakage is prevented by a collar 31 on the spindle bearing against a packing 32 under the action of a spring 33 arranged within a knob 30. The knob is internally screwthreaded to co-operate with a slidable indicator 34. In a modification, the two valves are actuated by a three-armed lever turning on fixed pivots. The cold water valve may be fitted with a bellows balancing device. Fig. 5 shows a device adapted to be fitted to the outlet from the mixing valve to direct the outflow either to a shower or to a bath. It comprises a lift valve member normally held to its seat by a spring 41 but removed therefrom when the valve is rotated to cause cam 42 to rise out of a fixed mating recess 43. According to the Provisional Specification the screw 13 can be replaced by a cam.
