Abstract

515,704. Gas-filled electric incandescent lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 9, 1938, No. 17180. Convention date, June 12, 1937. [Class 39 (ii)] In a lamp with an operating pressure exceeding one atmosphere and a bulb of substantially cylindrical shape with an internal diameter not exceeding 25 m m. at the position of the filament, the filament 1 is located in the neighbourhood of one of the end faces of the bulb 2 and extends in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bulb, so that those portions of the bulb which have the highest temperature during operation come into contact with the gas or vapour surrounding the lamp which has the lowest temperature. In the example the bulb 2 is enclosed within a bulb 9 provided with upper and lower apertures 11, 10 respectively through which the chamber formed between bulbs 2, 9 communicates with the open air, whereby the cooling current circulates in the manner indicated by arrows D. Alternatively the apertures 10, 11 may be omitted and the chamber between the bulbs filled with a heat-dissipating gas such as helium, or a vapour at a pressure of at least 10 cms. of mercury. In a modification adapted more particularly for use in a turbulent surrounding medium the cylindrical lamp bulb is surrounded by a cylindrical member which is open at both ends, the surrounding medium being sucked in at the lower end and passing up along the wall of the tube.
