Abstract
514,574. Dividing by fusion. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. May 13, 1938, No. 14274. Convention date. June 11, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] On starting a metalremoving operation by means of oxidizing gas jets the usual preheating means are applied such as jets of a mixture of oxygen and acetylene disposed in the nozzle around the oxygen jet, but only sufficient preheat to continue an operation - when such has been started is applied, the starting up being effected by feeding a portion of wire to the flames and depositing this on the body from which metal has to be removed as a molten globule and directing oxidizing gas thereon which starts a metal removing operation. The apparatus comprises an oxy-acetylene torch T on which is mounted a device F for feeding lengths of metal wire W to the preheating jets from the nozzle N. Adjacent the nozzle the wire is supported in a guide G. Oxygen enters the torch at 7 under the control of a valve normally closed by a spring 11 and adapted to be opened by a lever L pivoted to the outside of the casing. Acetylene enters at 22 under the control of a valve 23. The wire feeding device F comprises two spaced guide members 37 and 38 between which a pivoted gripping member 52 is oscillated by means of a link 58 connected to the lever L. In a modified form the wire is fed by friction rollers operated by a pawl and ratchet device from the lever L.
