Abstract
The supply of gas to a catalytic main burner 10 is controlled by a valve 7 actuated by a thermostat 6, Fig. 1 (not shown), heated by a catalytic auxiliary burner 13. When the C0 2 content of the surrounding air reaches one per cent the consequential fall in temperature of the auxiliary burner causes the gas supply to the main burner to be cut off or reduced. The supply to the auxiliary burner may also be cut off. To start the main and auxiliary burners a rod in a valve assembly 12 is pulled to open three valves supplying gas to three lines a, b, c and the burners are lit. After a time the main burner opens a thermostatic valve 14 and the pull rod is released to close the three lines a, b, c and at the same time a needle valve 15, Fig. 3 (not shown), in the valve assembly 12 is manually opened to supply gas to a line d which now supplies the main and auxiliary burners. The auxiliary burner comprises a platinum catalyst 1 disposed inside a tube 2 fed with a gas air mixture by a cylindro-conical tube 3. The tube containing the catalyst has openings 8 above the catalyst which may be closed and ends in a nozzle 9 disposed near the main burner 10. The thermostat 6 may be disposed above or below or along the axis of the catalyst. The auxiliary burner may be ignited by an electric resistor.
