513,818. Tolymethylcarbinol derivatives. CHEMISCH-PHARMAZEUTISCHE AKT.- GES. BAD HOMBURG, and KOHLSTAEDT, E. Aug. 12, 1938, No. 23865. [Class 2 (iii)] Water-soluble compounds of therapeutic use are prepared by partially esterifying a dicarboxylic acid with p-tolymethylcarbinol and converting the ester-acid into a salt with an appropriate organic or inorganic base. The process may be effected by reacting equinolecular proportions of the carbinol and a dicarboxylic acid anhydride in the presence of an atomic proportion of an alkali metal; the ester-acids may then be liberated by addition of a mineral acid and converted into their water-soluble salts, e.g. alkali, alkaline earth metal and ammonium salts or salts with diethylamine or ethylene diamine. Examples are given in which the anhydrides of camphoric, phthalic, succinic and maleic acids are treated with sodium p-tolymethylcarbinolate in benzene solution and the resulting ester-acids converted into salts as above.
