Abstract
513,171. Vehicle bodies and doors ; non-conducting coverings for sound. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and SWALLOW, W. March 29, 1938, No. 9543. [Classes 103 (ii) and 108 (i)] [Also in Group XIIII] In order to damp the vibrations of a panel such as a sheetmetal panel of a vehicle body, at least one narrow strip of a material such as rubber, rubber solution, felt, tar, asphalt, or other elastic' or plastic material having substantial internal friction, is attached to the panel, the surface of the strip away from the. panel being held under restraint so as to be wholly or substantially incapable of extension or contraction. As shown in Fig. 1, a rubber strip B is connected by adhesion to a metal or other panel A and a thin, preferably sheet-metal strip C is connected similarly to the strip B, vibration of the panel A resulting in bending of the panel which is resisted by shear stresses in the strip B. The invention is also shown applied to a door-panel, to which two pairs of narrow strips B, C are connected. The restraining strip C may consist alternatively of metal foil, perforated metal, wire netting, paper, leather, various kinds of non-extensible cloth, synthetic resin, wood veneer &c. When rubber is put between a metal panel and a metal restraining strip adhesion may be effected by a petroleum-base rubber solution. The exposed surface of a strip of material applied to a panel may be treated to produce a restraining skin. Specification 456,235 is referred to.
