A form of road construction includes upon a supporting, coherent solid underlayer, an intermediate layer formed by a flexible sheet of a synthetic plastic that has been permanently deformed to produce therein a multiplicity of hollows of a depth of at least 1 mm., the said sheet being laid with the said hollows in the underside thereof, and on top of the plastic sheet a layer produced from settable material and of such a thickness that the hollows are not substantially deformed by the weight of the unset material. One or more further layers of road material may be applied over the set layer produced by said settable material. A smooth plastic sheet may be interposed between the underlayer and the intermediate layer.
