Abstract

512,399. Chucks. HEPBURN, J. T. March 8, 1938, No. 4506/39. Convention date, May 10, 1937. Divided out of 512,329. [Class 83 (iii)] A chuck for shell-turning is adapted to receive a shell 28 placed nose inwards and comprises expanding means adapted to pass into and grip the bore of the nose of the shell and contracting means for gripping the outer wall of the shell near the base thereof. A'fluidpressure piston operated rod 15 is connected through a slidable boss 18 to a rod 20 which pulls, through a spring 22 on gripping elements 26 which slide up on a wedge-piece 29 to grip the interior of the shell. The wedge-piece 29 is connected to a sleeve slidable over the boss 18 and within the spindle 13, and therefore tending to be pushed in the direction of the rod 15 by the first gripping action. The sleeve is connected by rods 32 to contracting gripping elements 34 which work in conjunction with a tapered portion of the spindle and close on the shell subsequent to the action of the internal gripping members.
