512,182. Potyhydric alcohols. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 27, 1938, No. 19023. [Class 2 (iii)] Aliphatic polyhydroxy compounds containing at least three hydroxy groups, are made by treating 1 : 4-dihydroxy-butylene-2 or its substitution products, such as 1 :4-dihydroxy- 2 : 4-dimethyl- or 1 : 1 : 4 : 4-tetramethyl-butylene-2, in the liquid phase with oxidizing agents, e.g., per-acids and their salts, hypohalous acids and their salts, or chlorine in the presence of water or alkalis. Catalysts, e.g., osmium tetroxide, may also be used. When hypohalous acids are used, trihydroxy compounds containing one halogen atom are first formed ; these are hydrolyzed to tetrahydroxy compounds. In examples (1) cis-1 : 4- dihydroxy-butylene-2 is oxidized to erythritol with (a) potassium permanganate, (b) hydrogen peroxide and (c) sodium persulphate ; (2) chlorine is passed into a solution of 1 : 4 dihydroxy-butylene-2 in sodium carbonate, and the erythritol-2-chlorhydrin is hydrolyzed to erythritol. The dibenzol derivatives of the products are described. Specification 508,543 is referred to.
