Abstract
Bz-1-benzanthrone aldehyde and its nuclear substitution products are obtained by treating bz-1-w-phthaliminomethyl-benzanthrone or a nuclear substitution product thereof with an oxidising agent in the presence of aqueous alkali, or by previously preparing the intermediate phthalaminic acid and converting it by oxidation into the aldehyde. A catalyst may be employed. According to examples: (1) bz - 1 - w - phthalimino - methylbenzanthrone is treated with air in presence of caustic alkali to give the bz-1-aldehyde which may be oxidised in customary manner to benzanthrone bz-1-carboxylic acid. The intermediatelyformed phthalaminic acid prepared according to any known method may be employed initially; (2) the 6-chloro derivative is similarly treated with air or sodium hypochlorite, and the 6-bromo derivative may also be employed. Potassium ferricyanide and hydrogen peroxide are also specified as oxidising agents. Ferric hydroxide may be employed as catalyst. The starting materials are obtained by condensing benzanthrone or a nuclear substitution product thereof with w-halogen-methylphthalimide. Specification 352,626 is referred to.
