Abstract
511,860. Tanks. SMITH, F. H. Feb. 24, 1938, No. 5908. [Class 69 (i)] A reinforced concrete tank for storing hydrocarbons and other liquids has one or more networks of drains or cavities moulded close together in the walls by the use of withdrawable cores and communicating by one or more openings with the outside of the tank. In the tank shown, vertical conduits 2 in the walls open into an annular chamber 4 communicating with the outside by a passage 5, and at their lower ends communicate with passages 3 in the base, the passages 3 either being connected in pairs or communicating with two conduits 6, 7 which divide the bottom into quadrants. In the cover are passages 8, connected to the outside by a passage 10. In the case of an integral cover, the passages may communicate with the passages 2, the channel 4, or a separate annular channel. The conduits may be filled with water or other liquid or a gas under pressure to render the tank walls non-porous. The tank may in addition have a liquid-proof lining, for example, the wall may be metallized, or sprayed or painted with a material resistant to petrol or oil, or lined with metal plates.
