Abstract

511,525. Food for animals ; cheese; yeast; alcohol. SLADE, R. E., BIRKINSHAW, J. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5208. [Classes 5 (ii) and 84] [Also in Group VI] Grass or other green crop is pulped with water, the bulk of the fibre is removed by coarse flltration, and the plasma is precipitated from the filtrate by the addition of acid, such as hydrochloric acid. The precipitate may be dried until its moisture is reduced to less than ten per cent. It may be obtained in the form of of granules, cakes or powder. The moisture may be removed by pressure, as in cheese making, molasses and, or, cheese ferments being added if desired, and the whole allowed to ripen out of contact with the air. The filtrate from which the bulk of the plasma has been precipitated may be seeded with baker's yeast together with ammonium sulphate and a phosphate such as dibasic ammonium phosphate. A finely-divided air stream is passed through the seeded liquor, and the resulting yeast may be used as such or mixed with the "grass cheese" produced as described above. The products are suitable as food or as feeding stuffs. In some cases, alcohol instead of yeast is produced from the filtrate from which the plasma has been precipitated. Further plasma may be obtained from the fibrous residue by treatment with alkali.
