Abstract
511,518. Vehicle bodies. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5163. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1937. [Class 108 (i)] A self-supporting or chassis-supporting streamlined vehicle body comprises a framework constituted by intersecting shaped longitudinal and transverse frames dividing the interior into spaces situated side-by-side and one behind other. As shown, the forward portion of a framework comprising longitudinals n, o bent to form upper and lower bars n', o' and n<2>, o<2> respectively constituting longitudinal frames which divide the body into three longitudinal compartments A, B, C, and a series of transverse frames, only two (p, q) of which are shown, stiffened by vertical struts p<1>, p<2> and q<1>, q<2> respectively. The bars n<1>, n<2>, o<1>, o<2> may converge rearwardly to a common point or separately towards a rear edge. The engine is arranged in the forward or rear end of compartment A while the side compartments B, C house the wheels and fuel tanks &c. In modifications (1) the frame is supported by chassis longitudinals disposed inside the compartment A and (2) the upper or lower parts of the transverse frames extending between the struts are omitted. The upper parts of the road wheels may be enclosed by housings built into the side compartments B, C. Preferably the body is divided into the compartments over its whole height and enclosed by metal sheath a, but the compartments may extend only up to approximately half the height of the body in which case the upper part with the roof is placed upon the lower part.
