Abstract
509,872. Inductances. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 4, 1938, No. 23092. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1937. [Class 38 (ii)] A saturable reactor comprises a pair of formerwound alternating current windings 11, 12 and a direct current winding 13, two magnetic cores 17, 18, each composed of a strip of magnetic material spirally wound as shown, being arranged to link different sides of the direct current winding 13 with respective alternating current winding. The windings 11, 12 may be arranged co-planor with and outside or inside the direct current winding 13 and may be linked by a further magnetic core. Alternatively they may be arranged side by side with the direct current winding. The windings may be insulated with impregnated paper and the cores may be made of 3 per cent. silicon steel strip having the most favourable magnetic properties in the direction of its length. The strip is wound and heat-treated and is then wound into the windings so that the outside layer of strip remains on the outside. The alternating current windings may be connected in series or parallel but in either case are arranged to produce opposite effects with respect to the magnetic flux threading the direct current windings.
