Abstract
509,258. Valves. PARFITT, A. W. (Adams, A. H.). Jan. 12, 1938, No. 1017. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIX] A relief valve for use in an apparatus for determining the cubical contents of tanks, comprises a casing 10, Fig. 2, containing an exhausted aneroid 20 formed of metal having a low temperature coefficient. The aneroid controls a valve 22 co-operating with a valve opening 23 leading to the atmosphere, the opening being formed in a sleeve 24 adjustable to vary the pressure at which the valve will open. The space surrounding the aneroid is connected by the conduit 12 to the tanks A, B, C, Fig. 1, and, through a conduit 26 and an adjustable orifice 28, to a source of high pressure, such as the underside of a wing of the aircraft. The arrangement is such that the pressure air entering the space will pass into the tanks until the pressure rises sufficiently to open the valve, after which it will pass direct to the atmosphere through the valve opening 23, the pressure then remaining constant. The various valves V, VG, V+, V-, Fig. 1, of the apparatus are controlled pneumatically by master valves 60, 62 actuated manually or by cams 66, 67 on a shaft 68, Fig. 1, driven by a wind motor and making one revolution in, say, every four or five minutes. Each valve, Fig. 3, comprises a casing containing a soft rubber bulb 45 adapted, when connected to a source of high pressure to expand and thus close an orifice 44 by entering its cone-shaped front portion thereto. Each bulb is connected through one of the master valves and a conduit 64 to a source of pressure such as the underside of a wing, adjustable leaks 63 being provided to permit the bulbs to deflate when the associated master valve is closed. A check valve, Fig. 6, for use with the apparatus comprises a disc of cellulose acetate film 90 freely movable in a chamber 83 that communicates by ports 81 and a bore 80a with the associated tank and, by perforations in a disc 86, with the relief valve. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 181,362, [Class 106 (i)]
